UNRELIABLE WITNESS
New Monotypes by Bellamy Printz
on view through April 30, 2025
My work explores issues of memory, time, and incident. The sentient experience of a moment and the physical reminder of a photograph are primary points of departure in my working process. As an artist, I look to photographs as a starting point rather than its conclusion. Through discovery, manipulation and layering, I increase my emotional and intellectual connection to this photographic archive, and I gain a deeper understanding of the photographer’s act--the objective of making the image; the gaze of the subject; and the spontaneous gestures that are captured with the snap of the shutter. It is this precise moment suspended in time that I find most engaging.
While navigating these photographs, I find hidden, sometimes latent, moments. Recent studio investigations have resulted in techniques that allow me to combine the mechanical elements of photography with the expressiveness of watercolor painting. In truth, I am tracing back to my youngest years as an artist before I discovered printmaking. As an experienced printmaker, I relish combining the freedom and freshness of painting with the mastery of technical tools at my disposal. These process-driven inquiries continue to lead me into new areas of image-making that excite me and continue to drive my artistic practice forward.
